Ses Salines Natural Park protects the salt flats dunes and pine forest that stretch behind the beach of the same name on the south coast. The park spans both Ibiza and neighbouring Formentera making it one of the largest protected areas in the Balearics. Working salt pans still operate within the park much as they have for centuries with white mineral mounds visible from several viewpoints. Birdwatchers come specifically for the flamingos and other wading birds that gather in the shallow waters. Walking trails cross through the dunes and pine forest connecting the beach with quieter viewpoints further inland. The whole area remains protected from development which has kept this stretch of coast unlike almost anywhere else on the island.
