Villa Savannah is a newly built contemporary finca for rent on a private hillside estate beside the village of Santa Gertrudis, in the municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu, crowning a hilltop where sunrise and sunset are experienced in vivid technicolour. There are 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms behind a design of real ambition, with interiors finished to a level of detail that reflects how much the owners care for the natural setting around them. The house sits with sensitivity on its elevated position, built from an understanding of local architecture carried into modern versatility. Sloping Ibizan masonry facades are answered by generous glazing that welcomes excellent natural light at every hour of the day. Arriving feels private and unhurried, which is exactly what the position was chosen for.
Space and craft
The lateral layout gives the house versatility and sensible divisions between its parts. All 5 bedrooms open to the fragrant garden and each has its own bathroom with luxury fittings, in calming pastel tones that make them a retreat from the generous, free flowing entertaining spaces. The furniture was designed and made by the owner together with a local craftsman, giving the house a peaceful domestic austerity with Scandinavian accents that remains essentially Ibizan. The open kitchen, in wood finishes and consistent materials, is delicately drawn to communicate with the social areas, while discreet high quality appliances keep performance high. Elegant porches with hanging lights and luxurious furniture offer space for conversation or a quieter corner, and the large infinity pool, under a minimalist pergola, catches the movement of sunlight reflected off the water and ties the house to its surroundings. Evenings run long here, over dinner with friends and a shared cinema experience at home.
Around Santa Gertrudis
The expansive plot is a bucolic refuge entirely in step with the rural vernacular, with wide views over the countryside and over the lush greens and bursts of colour of the garden. The village of Santa Gertrudis is close by, one of the liveliest in the centre of the island, near enough to be useful without costing the finca any of its privacy.
