Sa Pedrera - Atlantis

Sa Pedrera also known as Atlantis is a former quarry cut into the cliffs near Es Vedrà where stone was carved out to build much of Ibiza Town centuries ago. Rough hewn steps and carved faces remain in the rock today. The site later became known informally as Atlantis after visitors in the nineteen seventies began carving statues and symbols into the stone giving the quarry its current mythical reputation. Reaching it requires a proper hike down a steep and sometimes difficult path. The reward is a striking swimming spot surrounded by carved rock walls with views out toward Es Vedrà itself. Sturdy shoes and a reasonable level of fitness are essential given the terrain involved. For adventurous visitors willing to make the walk Sa Pedrera is one of the most atmospheric spots anywhere on the south coast.
